Brief Rainfall Brings Relief From Rising Temperatures
Delhi residents woke up to an overcast sky and a light shower on Thursday, which provided some relief from the rising temperature that was giving Delhi a hard time in the last few days. Weather updates said sporadic rain was recorded across several parts of the city and in areas of the National Capital Region (NCR) early morning, which helped keep the heat at bay.
It was not a heavy downpour, but plenty of rain to send the weather off the day. The maximum temperature in the city hovered around 30.1 degrees Celsius, marginally above the seasonal average, but the minimum fell to 18.1 degrees Celsius, almost four notches below normal. This drop in temperature provided a nice morning in the day for residents who had been dealing with warmer weather earlier in the week.
Meteorologists said rain amounts differed in various neighborhoods of the city. Drizzle was found only in a few localities, with 3.5 mm of rainfall recorded at Pitampura, one of the highest for the city during this brief spell. The sky stayed gray throughout the morning but led to clearing conditions by midday, leaving New Yorkites with partly cloudy skies for the remainder of the day.
Western Disturbance Responsible for Weather Change
Weather officials attribute the downpour to a western disturbance, a weather phenomenon that brings rain, clouds, and cooler temperatures in northern parts of India. The light showers observed across the city have been due to this disturbance, which had recently moved into the region. Despite this, there could be drizzle or light rain in other areas where the system’s remaining moisture is still in the atmosphere.
India Meteorological Department (IMD) said that a western disturbance is expected to hit northwestern India, besides the new spell here. The new system is expected to reach the region by the night of March 17, which could induce more rain and cloudy weather over Delhi and neighbouring states. If this system fortifies, the region could experience scattered rains from March 19 to March 20.
Forecast Suggests More Showers Ahead
The IMD forecast predicts rain along with overcast skies and relatively cooler weather for the next few days in the national capital. The rain should also keep temperatures from spiking, at least for a while. But weather forecasters are warning that the mercury could start rising once more as soon as the current system departs.
While this initially sounds like the start to a heat wave, potential rainfall events in the coming days could hold off any sweat-inducing rising mercury, as it is much cooler than what we would usually expect in early summer weather.
Impact on Daily Life
It was the first fall in October that occurred not only in terms of weather but also as an improvement for the city. Many welcomed the sudden shift, with the rain lowering dust levels and offering some respite from dry, warm conditions. Morning commuters were greeted with cooler temps, bringing a little bit of comfort to joining the traffic.
Though the showers were momentary, they point out the erratic character of pre-summer weather patterns in north India. Delhi residents will enjoy partly cloudy skies and pleasant weather before the Indian Meteorological Department predicts more rainfall over the next few days as the region heads towards the hotter months of the year.
In general, the latest wet weather has provided a temporary respite from climbing mercury, and with rain also on the forecast in the coming days, moderate conditions are likely to remain for now in the capital.
